The course provides an overview over sociological issues and debates around contemporary families, drawing predominantly on literature about Britain and other Western societies. In contemporary Western societies a diversity of family forms exists besides the nuclear family, each associated with particular and often complex relationships and challenges. Family members can be spread over more than one household and family roles and relationships have been transformed. The course focuses on these recent and on-going transformations of families, family relationships and family life.
